A short drive south along the Alston road takes you to Tindale tarn. previously a lead mining area it is now an RSPB bird reserve. There is a lovely walk around the tarn.

Just under 10 miles from Lanercost, on the road up to Alston lies Tindale tarn. This whole area was once a scene of intense mining activity and there was even a branch train line up here.
Now it is a bird reserve for the RSPB.
