Introduction
Welcome to Lanercost. Set in the valley of the River Irthing this is a quiet and historic part of the Cumbrian countryside. This blog will introduce you to some of the local attractions and suggest places you might like to visit. It is mainly just pictures and a short narrative which makes it ideal for viewing on an IPAD.
The posts cover both the Priory and Lanercost as well as some interesting places nearby. For example
1. POW camp 18 at Featherstone. Dating back to WW2.
2. Lambley viaduct. Once part of the South Tyne railway between Haltwhistle and Alston. Now part of the South Tyne trail and offering some great views.
3. The Robin Hood Tree. Famous as part of the Kevin Costner film about Robin Hood.
4. Nearby Vindolanda along with the small museum at Chesterholm.
5. Long Meg and her sisters. A prehistoric stone circle in the beautiful Eden Valley.

Finally a note of thanks for our friends over on the west coast who manufacture and sell fake grass.
